Theories surrounding HBO’s biggest show Game Of Thrones come and go, week in and week out. This week the fans were sent into a frenzy after a redditor claimed to have spotted a ghost in last week’s Game Of Thrones episode. The “ghost” was spotted in the background prior to Arya Stark’s intense sparring session with Brienne.
A woman walks past walks past in the background when Arya reminds Brienne of her vow to her mother to serve and protect both her daughters. The woman walks by at the exact time Arya says the word “mother”. The timing of this “ghostly” figure’s appearance has made fans think that it was in fact Catelyn Stark’s ghost.
The fans may not necessarily be wrong about this particular theory as it is clearly backed by the books. In the books, After Catelyn Stark is brutally murdered in the Red Wedding, her body is stripped of clothes by the Frey foot soldiers and thrown in the river.
After that her naked body is pulled out of the river by Arya’s direwolf Nymeria and is revived by the lord of the light through Beric Dondarrion. But the Catelyn that comes out on the other side of the resurrection is not Catelyn anymore. She becomes Lady Stoneheart, a cold and merciless figure that only wants vengeance against Lannisters.
What’s interesting is that Lady Stoneheart’s character crosses paths with Brienne and Podrick in the books and both of them were present in the scene where the ghost was spotted. And on top of this, the woman or the ghost that walks by has red hair, the same red hair Catelyn Stark had. Could all of this be just a random coincidence? Maybe.
George R.R. Martin was in dispute with the producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss following the appearance of Lady Stoneheart on the TV show. The writer was adamant on having the character on the show and after failing to persuade the directors, he labelled it as the first major diversion of the show from the books.
In addition Alex Graves, (Director of one of the episodes) was asked questions about Lady Stonerheart’s appearance on the show to which he responded by saying that bringing back Michelle Fairley as a dead white zombie killing people doesn’t make much sense. He explained that back in 2014. And the actress herself was quoted saying “Yeah, the character’s dead. She’s dead.” So it couldn’t be any clearer.
So Lady Stoneheart’s appearance on the TV show is very unlikely and it doesn’t make sense at this point of the story. But could that ghostly figure have been the undead Catelyn? That’s the question that has left the fans wondering.
