Real Madrid are a team synonymous with signing the best players in the world. A transfer window does not go by, without the club being linked with top talent but so far this summer, the club have been relatively quiet.
However, this is not something new, as a look back at the players which arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu last season, suggest. The biggest transfer of last summer, was the purchase of full-back, Danilo, from FC Porto, closely followed by Mateo Kovacic, from Inter Milan. A look back at transfers prior to last summer, see the likes of Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos, James Rodriguez, Luka Modric, Angel Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, David Beckham, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo all joining the club.
This summer, the biggest transfer made by Real Madrid, has seen striker Alvaro Morata, return to the club from Juventus. There is even a suggestion the Spanish international may be loaned or sold to another club, prior to the start of the season, so this is not a player who is going to strengthen team. The indication, is manager Zinedine Zidane, wanted to get Paul Pogba in a Real Madrid shirt but he has joined Manchester United, a team which cannot even offer Champions League football next season, never mind being one of the favourites to win the competition.
Yes, Pogba has been at Manchester United before in his career and may like the thought of a return but ultimately, Manchester United have offered more money, both in terms of the transfer fee and possibly the players wages. The Premier League is cash rich at the moment and Manchester United have stamped their authority on proceedings, with the signing of Pogba. This leaves Real Madrid with a problem, because outside of Pogba, who else is there to sign, who could make a real impact in the Real Madrid first team?
Both Madrid and Barcelona already have a selection of the world’s best players and Barcelona will not allow any of their stars to leave for Madrid, as Figo once did. Outside of Barcelona, who else have players who are seriously considered as stars of the world game? Who could come in and replace Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, Modric and Kroos? Even the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Sergio Aguero would struggle to command a regular starting place ahead of Benzema, especially with Zidane in charge.
Real Madrid have not made a deliberate decision, to not sign a big name player over the last two years. That being said, other than Pogba, there is not a true superstar of the game left to bring in and any that develop, could easily be tempted to the money pot of the Premier League.
Real Madrid have a possible, two window transfer ban coming up and could do with bringing a couple more faces in before then. However, at this current time in world football, is there a potential Galactico out there?
