With the 2016 summer transfer window approaching its final stage, numerous clubs are making their final push for new players to sign, ahead of yet another European football season. Like every transfer window, we are being blinded by incredible fees that big clubs pay for proven, but also unproven players throughout the season. 2016 is no expectation, as we are witnessing the transfer record being broken again.
With Paul Pogba’s transfer to Manchester United for well-over 100€ (100 million pounds), the new transfer record is set. But there have been numerous expensive deals in the summer so far and we will see which of those stand out.
Although initially transferred for “only” 35€ million, Benfica managed to get huge add-ons for the transfer of their 18-year old asset to Bayern Munich. The final fee is expected to go as high as 80€ million, making him one of the most expensive signings of all time. Despite being only 18-year old, Renato Sanches stared at the European championship 2016 in France, guiding Portugal to the title. While Bayern Munich is not used to pay big fees for player, this one is expected to be well-worth the money.
One of the biggest mercenaries of modern football is Brazilian striker Hulk. At his prime one of the best players in Europe, Hulk made a surprise big-money move from Porto to Zenit St. Petersburg. To prove that he is still playing for money, Hulk accepted the transfer to Chinese Superleague for 55.5€ million, in the most expensive deal in this Asian country. Now at 30 years of age, many will wonder what would have happened if Hulk decided to join a more competitive European club.
What is a summer transfer window without Manchester City in the whole story. The Citizens took Pep Guardiola as their manager for the forthcoming season and he immediately made some moves, signing Nolito from Celta de Vigo and Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund. However, the most expensive acquisition is former Schalke winger Leroy Sane, who arrived for hefty 51€ million. With Sane scoring only eight goals for Schalke in the previous campaign, this fee comes as a surprise, but we will be eager to see the 20-year old in action this season.
Argentine striker enjoyed a frantic 2015/2016 season, as he broke the record of most Serie A goals in a single season. Higuain scored 36 and equaled the record from late Gino Rossetti, who scored 36 as well nearly 90 years ago. Higuain controversially switched to Juventus this summer in a transfer worth 90€ million, making him the third (now fourth) most expensive player of all time. In his prime, Higuain is considered a top asset, but Juventus could not afford him, if they did not offload their best player this summer.
In one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer, Paul Pogba and his infamous agent Mino Raiola agreed the transfer to Manchester United for the record breaking 100£ million. Paul Pogba left Manchester United in a controversial manner back in 2012, after failing to agree a contract. However, Pogba prospered at Juventus and established himself as one of the finest players of his generation, being pivotal in Juventus for years. When Manchester came knocking again, Pogba could not resist and he now joins Manchester United and their new manager Jose Mourinho for a world record fee.
