XCOM 2 is already being called one of the best games of 2016 so far. But, despite the rave reviews, non-pc gamers have yet to see a console version of the turn-based strategy game. Two months ago, XCOM 2’s publisher, 2K Games announced that the game would be available for consoles on September 6th. However, in a statement earlier today, 2K Games announced that the XCOM 2’s console release date will be delayed by three weeks in order to get the game ready.
Many XCOM fans are undoubtedly disappointed by the news of the delay, however with the problems that plagued XCOM 2’s PC launch, having 2K and Firaxis take a few extra weeks to get everything right probably isn’t the worst idea in the world.
The exact reasons behind the delay haven’t yet been revealed, however porting XCOM 2’s new procedurally generated map system to consoles is probably a huge undertaking. Though Firaxis has always been dedicated to making a good PC game, XCOM: Enemy Unknown was extremely successful when it was ported to consoles, so it’s hard to believe that the developer is taking this job lightly.
Along with talk of the console port comes the inevitable discussion over the inclusion of mod support for XCOM 2 on consoles. XCOM players have been having a ball with the various game mods that are available on PC. These mods give players a variety of things to mess around with in the game – including things like the addition of puppy guns and Storm Troopers into the game. Ever since Fallout 4 introduced mods into console gaming, every game that has a large modding community on PC has fans hoping those mods will be available in the console.
Firaxis has yet to reveal if XCOM 2 will have mod support but at this rate many fans will probably be happy to just get the game on console as soon as possible. Along with a procedurally generated map system, XCOM 2 also boasts a total reimagining of the game’s combat system, which was redesigned to better reflect the guerrilla-style warfare that is the bread and butter of the gameplay.
Since there’s still a lot of unanswered questions around the console release of XCOM 2, aspiring alien hunters will just have to wait a little bit longer.
XCOM 2 is currently available for PC, but will launch on PS4 and Xbox One beginning September.
